There is so much poverty and unemployment in South Africa at the moment that I felt that we needed to do something. I thought about the Mandela Day, when we commemorate the lifetime of service Nelson Mandela gave to South Africa and the world.
On the 18th of July every year, South Africans come together and give of their time by doing charitable acts – we, as a company wanted to make a difference – so I proposed to make 67 lunch hampers for homeless/destitute people (Nelson Mandela fought for social justice for 67 years).
My Line Manager was fully supportive and immediately loved the idea!
All staff met in our canteen after lunch and each personally made a sandwich which was put into a Tupperware luncher and made up a lunch pack which also consisted of an apple/orange and a fruit juice. Each staff member was tasked to take their self-made lunch pack and to give it to a homeless or destitute person on their drive home after work.
The reaction of the recipients was so heartwarming – we could not believe that a small token such as a sandwich, juice and fruit – could make someone so happy. Small children, men and women (old and young) whoever we could find, received this small but welcome gift from Tupperware.
It was such a wonderful experience knowing that we spread some happiness and nourishment to people in need. No matter how big or small, if we make an effort to help the homeless/destitute – you will be rewarded, with a smile and gratitude.
